Winter Climbing in Scotland

Discover a New Side of the Mountains

Explore Scotland’s winter mountains with personal instruction and guided climbing from Hilladventures.

Whether you’re taking your first steps onto steeper winter terrain or building on previous climbing experience, we’ll start with your ambitions and plan around your ability and the conditions.

With a maximum of two clients per instructor, there’s time to focus on your skills and the climb ahead.

Is Winter Climbing for Me?

You may be a winter hill walker interested in steeper ground, a summer rock climber keen to try axes and crampons, or an experienced winter climber with a particular objective in mind.

Tell me about your winter walking and climbing experience, fitness and what you’d like to achieve. We’ll discuss a suitable starting point before you book.

If you’re new to using an ice axe and crampons, our Winter Skills course may be a useful first step.

What We Can Focus On

Depending on your experience, aims and the conditions, your climbing days can include:

• Movement with axes and crampons on steeper terrain.
• Ropework and belaying in a winter climbing setting.
• Understanding route choices and mountain conditions.
• Developing confidence through practical climbing experience.

Climbing with the Conditions

Scottish winter climbing calls for flexibility. Snow, ice, wind and temperature influence which routes are suitable.

We’ll discuss possible objectives before your day, with the final plan guided by conditions and the experience of the party. A particular route or summit cannot be guaranteed.

Prices and Group Sizes

Climbing for two people:
One day — £190 per person.
Two days — £380 per person.

These prices are based on two people booking together, with one instructor.

Private one-to-one climbing:
£350 per day.

Ice axes and crampons are included in all options.

Equipment and Preparation

Alongside axes and crampons, you’ll need clothing and footwear suitable for a full winter mountain day.

Tell me what equipment you already have when you enquire so we can discuss suitability and what else you’ll need.

Plan Your Winter Climb

Get in touch with your preferred dates, the number of people booking and a brief outline of your winter walking and climbing experience.

If you have a route or skill in mind, include that too. If you’re unsure where to start, we can explore the options together.
